Pivot
A traditional pivoting joystick similar to what you’d find on modern console controllers.
Commonly used in
- PS5 controllers
- Xbox controllers
- Switch Pro controllers
Movement feel
Longer thumb travel with a familiar console-style feel and strong centering.
TL;DR
Feels the most like a normal console controller thumbstick.
Joy-Con
A compact version of a traditional pivot joystick with shorter movement and a smaller footprint.

- Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons
- Handheld devices
- Compact controllers
Movement feel
Lighter, faster, and more compact than full-size controller sticks.
TL;DR

Planar
A low-profile joystick that physically slides across the X-Y plane instead of pivoting
Commonly used in
- PSP handhelds
- Ultra-compact gaming devices
- Low-profile builds
Movement feel
Short, direct movement with a very low-profile and unique sliding feel.
TL;DR
A compact sliding joystick with fast, direct movement and minimal height
