Why Maintenance Matters

Over time, dust, skin oils, and debris can build up on your keypad. Not only will this affect the appearance of your device but can cause permanent damage and corrosion.

The OEM palm rests have a special coating that provides it a fantastic tactile feel, but if not properly maintained, it can start to peel and crack over time. My personal palm rest is 4 years old now and still going strong—scheduled cleaning has made all the difference!

What You’ll Need

Compressed air (optional)

Microfiber cloth

Mild dish soap

Warm water

Soft brush (like a toothbrush)

Cotton swabs or soft foam swabs

1. Regular Cleaning = Long Life

Your hands (and snacks) transfer grime, dust, and oils to your keypad.

Daily/Weekly:

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth to wipe the surface. Use a soft bristled brush to get into any nooks and crannies!
  • Use compressed air to blow out any debris from between the keys.

Monthly:

  • Use a cotton swab with 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the keycaps and edges. Don’t forget the scroll wheel!
  • Wipe down the wrist pad with water. It is made of Polyurethane leather, do not use real leather conditioners as they may degrade the material. Instead opt for PU specific conditioners.
  • Remove the palm rest and clean under it as well!

 2. Deep Clean (Every 3–6 Months)

  1. Carefully remove keycaps (if your model allows).
  2. Soak them in warm, soapy water for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Using a soft bristled brush, clean out the keycaps to get rid of any stubborn dirt.

  4. Rinse them out well and place them to dry. From this point on, I prefer to use disposable nitrile gloves to prevent any oils from transferring onto the fresh surfaces.
  5. While allowing the keycaps to dry, use compressed air to blow out any debris from the chamber under the keycaps. Then use 99% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to clean out the exposed keypad.
  6. After everything has thoroughly dried, place the keycaps back on the keypad and ensure they are properly pressed in.

Note: Don’t soak or expose the keypad body to water. Electronics and moisture don’t mix.

 3. Customize to your heart’s content and BACK UP Often

If you’ve created custom profiles or keymaps:

  • Export and back them up regularly from Synapse
  • Name them clearly for fast switching between games or apps

Maintain your keypad software up to date to ensure bug fixes and up to date firmware.

4. Store It Safely

If you’re transporting your keypad:

  • Use a padded pouch or case
  • Avoid wrapping the cable too tightly to prevent fraying.
    • Consider one of our detachable models to prevent fraying!
  • Keep it in a dry, dust-free zone when not in use

Bonus: Upgrade or Replace Worn Parts

Are your keycaps damaged or your wrist rest peeling? You can:

  • Replace keycaps with custom 3D printed options from our shop
  • Swap out a worn wrist rest with a palm rest replacement — we have spares in stock

Final Thoughts

Your keypad is an amazing and useful device. A bit of maintenance goes a long way in keeping your gear responsive, clean, and durable — whether you’re grinding Mythic+ dungeons, video editing, 3D modelling, etc.
